You've probably seen the ads. 'Get ₹78,000 from the government for going solar.' But when you actually try to figure out how to apply, it feels overwhelming — portals, documents, DISCOMs, consumer numbers.
Don't worry. By the end of this guide, you'll know exactly what PM Surya Ghar is, who qualifies, what documents you need, and how the money actually reaches your bank account. If you install with Volta Solar, we handle every single step for you.
What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
Launched in February 2024 by the Government of India, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the country's largest residential rooftop solar mission. The target is to bring solar energy to 1 crore Indian households.
The scheme offers two key benefits:
It's not a loan. It's not a discount voucher. The government transfers actual cash to your bank after installation.
How Much Subsidy Do You Get?
The subsidy is calculated on the basis of system size:
| System Size | Subsidy Per kW | Total Subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000/kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹30,000/kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹30,000 for first 2 kW + ₹18,000 for 3rd kW | ₹78,000 |
| Above 3 kW | Subsidy capped at ₹78,000 | ₹78,000 (max) |
So whether you install a 3 kW or a 10 kW system, the maximum subsidy is ₹78,000.

One subsidy is allowed per electricity meter number. Commercial connections and industrial connections are NOT eligible for this scheme.
Documents Required for PM Surya Ghar Application
Gather these before you begin:
Volta Solar collects these from you at the time of signing the installation agreement. You don't have to visit any office.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1 — Register on the PM Surya Ghar Portal
Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Click 'Apply for Rooftop Solar'. Enter your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), and consumer number. Register with your mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
Step 2 — Apply for Feasibility Approval
After registration, submit an application to your DISCOM (UPPCL, DVVNL, DHBVN, etc.) for feasibility approval. This is essentially asking the grid authority if your connection is suitable for solar. Approval typically takes 7–15 working days.
Step 3 — Install the Solar System
Once feasibility is approved, your MNRE-empaneled installer (that's us) installs the system. This takes 2–5 working days for a residential rooftop.
Step 4 — Apply for Net Meter
After installation, submit a net meter application to your DISCOM through the portal. The DISCOM sends a team to inspect and install the net meter. This step typically takes 15–30 days.
Step 5 — Submit Commissioning Certificate
Once the net meter is installed, your installer submits a commissioning certificate. Volta Solar handles this documentation entirely.
Step 6 — Subsidy Is Credited to Your Bank
After verification, the subsidy amount (up to ₹78,000) is transferred directly to your bank account. Timeline: typically 30–60 days after commissioning.
