PM Surya Ghar Subsidy 2026: How to Apply Online in UP & Haryana (Step-by-Step)

You've probably seen the ads. 'Get ₹78,000 from the government for going solar.' But when you actually try to figure out how to apply, it feels overwhelming — portals, documents, DISCOMs, consumer numbers.

Don't worry. By the end of this guide, you'll know exactly what PM Surya Ghar is, who qualifies, what documents you need, and how the money actually reaches your bank account. If you install with Volta Solar, we handle every single step for you.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Launched in February 2024 by the Government of India, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is the country's largest residential rooftop solar mission. The target is to bring solar energy to 1 crore Indian households.

The scheme offers two key benefits:

  • Direct subsidy of up to ₹78,000 on installation cost (transferred directly to your bank account)
  • Up to 300 units of free electricity every month through net metering credits
  • It's not a loan. It's not a discount voucher. The government transfers actual cash to your bank after installation.

How Much Subsidy Do You Get?

The subsidy is calculated on the basis of system size:

    | System Size | Subsidy Per kW | Total Subsidy |

    |---|---|---|

    | 1 kW | ₹30,000/kW | ₹30,000 |

    | 2 kW | ₹30,000/kW | ₹60,000 |

    | 3 kW | ₹30,000 for first 2 kW + ₹18,000 for 3rd kW | ₹78,000 |

    | Above 3 kW | Subsidy capped at ₹78,000 | ₹78,000 (max) |

So whether you install a 3 kW or a 10 kW system, the maximum subsidy is ₹78,000.

    Solar subsidy application portal
The PM Surya Ghar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) is the official gateway to claim your solar subsidy — Volta Solar manages this for all our customers.

Who Is Eligible for PM Surya Ghar Subsidy?

Eligibility is straightforward. You qualify if:

  • You are an Indian resident with a valid residential electricity connection
  • The property is in your name or you have the owner's written consent
  • You have not previously availed any government solar subsidy on this connection
  • Your installer is MNRE-empaneled (Volta Solar is registered)
  • The system is on-grid (not off-grid or standalone)
  • One subsidy is allowed per electricity meter number. Commercial connections and industrial connections are NOT eligible for this scheme.

Documents Required for PM Surya Ghar Application

    Gather these before you begin:

  • Aadhaar card (mandatory)
  • Electricity bill (latest — showing your consumer number)
  • Bank account details (passbook or cancelled cheque — for subsidy transfer)
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Property ownership proof (if required by your DISCOM)
  • Volta Solar collects these from you at the time of signing the installation agreement. You don't have to visit any office.

    Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1 — Register on the PM Surya Ghar Portal

Go to pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Click 'Apply for Rooftop Solar'. Enter your state, electricity distribution company (DISCOM), and consumer number. Register with your mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

Step 2 — Apply for Feasibility Approval

After registration, submit an application to your DISCOM (UPPCL, DVVNL, DHBVN, etc.) for feasibility approval. This is essentially asking the grid authority if your connection is suitable for solar. Approval typically takes 7–15 working days.

Step 3 — Install the Solar System

Once feasibility is approved, your MNRE-empaneled installer (that's us) installs the system. This takes 2–5 working days for a residential rooftop.

Step 4 — Apply for Net Meter

After installation, submit a net meter application to your DISCOM through the portal. The DISCOM sends a team to inspect and install the net meter. This step typically takes 15–30 days.

Step 5 — Submit Commissioning Certificate

Once the net meter is installed, your installer submits a commissioning certificate. Volta Solar handles this documentation entirely.

Step 6 — Subsidy Is Credited to Your Bank

After verification, the subsidy amount (up to ₹78,000) is transferred directly to your bank account. Timeline: typically 30–60 days after commissioning.

    Net meter installation UP
Net meter installation by UPPCL is the final step before your subsidy is disbursed to your bank account.

PM Surya Ghar in Uttar Pradesh — UPPCL Process

In UP, the application goes through UPPCL or your local DISCOM — DVVNL (Dakshin), PVVNL (Paschim), MVVNL (Madhyanchal), or PuVVNL (Poorvanchal). The process is the same but timelines may vary slightly by district.

Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad — PVVNL

    Lucknow, Kanpur — MVVNL

    Agra, Mathura — DVVNL

Volta Solar has completed subsidy applications across all four UPDISCOMs. We know the local documentation quirks and follow up on your behalf until the money hits your account.

PM Surya Ghar in Gurugram & Haryana — DHBVN Process

In Gurugram, the DISCOM is DHBVN (Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam). Haryana residents follow the same national portal process but DHBVN has its own internal timelines.

Haryana also runs state-level top-up incentives for solar in addition to the central subsidy. Contact us to check what's currently available in your district.

  • System cost: ₹1,95,000
  • PM Surya Ghar subsidy received: ₹78,000
  • Net cost paid: ₹1,17,000
  • Monthly savings now: ₹4,200–₹4,600
  • Payback period: Under 2.5 years

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing with a non-MNRE-empaneled contractor — you will NOT get the subsidy
  • Applying for an off-grid system — subsidy only applies to on-grid grid-tied systems
  • Incomplete bank details — subsidy transfer fails and you have to reapply
  • Not following up on net meter application — DISCOM delays are common; your installer should track this
  • Applying without a site survey — wrong system size means you miss optimization and may not get full benefit
  • Frequently Asked Questions

How long does PM Surya Ghar subsidy take to arrive in UP?

After the net meter is installed and commissioning certificate submitted, subsidy typically arrives within 30–60 days. In UP's major cities like Noida and Lucknow, Volta Solar customers have received subsidy in as little as 28 days.

Can I apply for PM Surya Ghar subsidy myself without an installer?

You can register on the portal yourself, but the installation must be done by an MNRE-empaneled installer to qualify for subsidy. Most customers let their installer handle the full process — it's faster and error-free.

Is PM Surya Ghar subsidy taxable?

No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is a direct benefit transfer and is not treated as taxable income under current Income Tax rules. However, always consult your CA for your personal situation.

Can tenants apply for PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

Yes, but the electricity connection and subsidy application must be in the name of the account holder. If you're a tenant, your landlord must give written consent, and the connection should be in your name.

What happens if my DISCOM rejects the net meter application?

Rejections are rare but do happen due to paperwork issues. Volta Solar resubmits and follows up with the DISCOM directly. We have dedicated liaison officers for UPPCL, DVVNL, and DHBVN.
